Lesson Objectives:
1. The student will be able to identify nouns in a sentence with 100 percent accuracy.
2. The student will be able to identify the three kinds of nouns; person, thing, place.
3. The student will be able to differentiate between nouns from verbs.
Procedures:
Introductory Activities:
1. To assess pre-knowledge and mastery learning, teacher writes on the board: “What is a verb?”
Students raise hands. Teacher chooses students randomly who must answer with the following, “A verb describes an action, a state, or an occurrence.” Teacher asks for examples. Students respond. Teacher gives feedback. (10 m)
2. Teacher tells students that today’s lesson is about the three different kinds of nouns; person, place, and thing. (2 min)
Developmental Activities:
1. Warm-up activity: Students watch a three minute You Tube video on “Nouns” to grab their attention and arouse their interest. (5 min) (Appendix A)
2. After the video, teacher asks, “What is a noun?” Students raise hands. Teacher chooses students randomly who must answer, “A noun is a person, a name, a thing, or an idea.” Teacher gives positive feedback for correct answers and helps those with the wrong ones. (5 min)
3. Teacher and students play the Noun Game. From a bucket full of the alphabet letters, teacher draws a letter and state her rule, “You must give me a (proper noun, for example) that starts with the letter (n, for example)”. Teacher calls students one by one and then picks a new letter for another round. (5 min)
4. Teacher and students play the Longest List. Teacher draws on the board a chart with three columns; people, places, things. Teacher creates three groups of two students. She distributes small papers with nouns. Each group goes to the board separately and paste the papers in the right column. (5 min) (Appendix B)
5. Students work on a worksheet to help them recognize the differences between nouns and verbs. Students circle nouns (person, place, thing) . Write in the alphabet list the nouns that start with the correct letter. (10 min) (Appendix C)
Closing Activity:
Wrap-up activity: Teacher reviews the definitions of nouns and verbs. Students work individually on worksheets distributed by the teacher. Teacher corrects the sheets and gives positive feedback. (15 min) (Appendix D)
Assignment:
Homework: teacher distributes handouts on nouns and verbs to be worked on at home. (1 min) (Appendix E)
