Mrs. Blair's Session

Last week’s session in Methodology 1 was very interesting. Dr. Annous invited Mrs. Joanna Blair to demonstrate to his class the use of arts in instruction. I was really amazed and shocked by her artistic abilities and dexterity. To reflect on this session, I believe that Mrs. Blair’s encouragement to us to use arts in second language acquisition was beneficial and original. Her utilization of different sizes of boxes to be used in an artistic and catchy display was marvelous. She taught us how to be creative in our classroom activities, how to be always ready, and how to use the simplest material and stationary. Her approach was through experiential learning and drama was the medium of instruction for teaching writing and speaking. Students worked in pairs and used their imagination to create four characters and a simple plot. Her approach targeted the artistic skills of students by drawing, coloring, cutting, and making puppets. We were like bees in hives busy in communication and interaction through language which is the true essence of learner-centered classrooms. Our collaboration is the core of the Communicative Method of Learning. We created characters, a story board, and acted up on stage. It was very smart of Dr. Annous to ask Mrs. Blair to show us the importance of the use of arts in second language acquisition classrooms.
